about

Pohl’s art is fundamentally abstract or non-representational. In this respect, one could also speak of pure painting. One could say that painting or painting itself is the subject of Pohl’s pictures. However, there is also a series of works that brings to mind mountain formations: Pohl plays with this obvious association, but ultimately it is about painting here – as in the other works.

Pohl’s painting is based on the (painterly and materially emphasized) line, on the trace of paint drawn with a broad palette knife. Sometimes Pohl interrupts the line and starts again: but the unbroken dominance of the linear nevertheless remains. Pohl’s painting is substantially non-literary or non-narrative in its non-representational nature. Nevertheless, his line – like writing – testifies to a temporal progression, i.e. a succession. Or, to put it another way: in Pohl’s work, painting tells exclusively of its own creation. And the viewer follows the painting action in Pohl’s pictures with the eye.

Not least due to the use of the special material – soft, warm wax – Pohl’s painting style was brisk right from the start.Today he no longer paints with wax, but he has retained the dynamic way of working.Where the palette knife (and thus the line) does not settle, the temporality is most evident. As Pohl’s lines are broad, they combine the dimension of the linear with that of the surface. This is where the fundamental role of color comes into play. Pohl’s painting is basically two-tone, in this respect simple and at the same time catchy. There is actually always a monochrome ground onto which a second color is applied with a palette knife. The background either shines through under the color applied on top or parts of the background color remain uncovered and thus enter into a direct dialogue with the upper color.Differences in intensity within the color track result solely from the different amounts of color material applied; there is never any refraction due to an admixture of other colors.

Pohl’s paintings are not auto-referential in their thematization of the possibilities of the painterly, but always take the viewer into consideration.

They want to move them, involve them, draw them to their side. They do this with the massive use of less strong colors and with their own dynamics. The combination of color and movement is the formula for the power of attraction in Pohl’s painting, which could be compared to that of tropical flowers.

Illusion is another key concept in the examination of Pohl’s painting. In truth, of course, everything in the pictures is static and two-dimensional, just as every picture is in reality static and two-dimensional, unless it uses tricks to circumvent the laws of optics or works with applications. With Pohl, we are dealing with the illusion of movement and that of space.Pohl’s special way of applying paint – the overlapping application of color material in sweeps – creates the impression of depth or spatiality. The fact that he plays with the double illusion of movement and three-dimensionality applies to Pohl’s entire oeuvre.

Pohl’s art lives – this is one of its basic characteristics – from the synergetic combination of opposites.

She combines the static with the dynamic, she combines space and time, surface and line. The fact that the paintings still clearly show the movements of their creation process is something she has in common with the various facets of informal art and abstract expressionism. But the application and luminosity of Pohl’s paintings are clearly contemporary. The main colors used by Pohl – Irgazin orange, phthalon green and alizarin red – lend the paintings a very special, I would say artificial brilliance.

With the compactness of their forms, their vivid contrasts of light and dark and their illusionary spatiality, the works of recent years have a sculptural quality about them.Of course, Pohl does not abandon the use of “total color”, one of the indispensable characteristics of his painting. The forms now stand out clearly from the monochrome background; they no longer take up the entire picture surface as they did in the early paintings. Not only in their formats, but also in the simplicity of the motifs, there is a monumentality that characterizes even small formats. Seen in this light, the circle is complete and

Pohl’s production in recent years takes him back to his sculptural beginnings on a different level.
